I am a veteran policy, culture, tech, and business writer and researcher, author of “Prison Rape,” and “An Ethnography of Lawmaking in Wales.” I am the CEO of Ravenna Studios, a multimedia creative firm, and host of the cultural ethics podcast “Postmortem: On Lateness & Untimely Questions.” I hail from the American West, where I started my career as a broadcaster and audio journalist for a regional radio cluster, and rose to the role of Program Director and syndicated host. Following this early success, I pivoted to government and policy work, focused on forensic science, public health, and criminal justice. After completing my education, I began as an advisor on national healthcare systems improvements in the UK and criminal justice reform in the US. In 2013, I became senior lead for the National PREA Resource Center, the USDOJ’s Prison Rape Elimination Act implementation project, and shortly after moved to Washington, DC area to spearhead the DOJ’s work on the PREA audit function. In 2018, I was named Associate Director for the project and stayed in that role until June 2022. Over the course of my career, I have served as editor or senior editor for several journals, over 70 book projects, and dozens of policy campaigns in the US and UK. I am formally trained as a lawyer, ethnographer, and theologian, with a J.D. and Ph.D. (earned concurrently) and a divinity degree from the Boston Theological Consortium. I have held several faculty positions, have lectured widely in the US, UK, and Europe, and am an award-winning science communicator, writer, and translator. I am also a long-time volunteer for social justice and human rights issues and have served various organizations, including Médecins Sans Frontières and the Soros Foundation/Open Society Institute. I have recently completed a book on the failure of prison rape policy in the US and am currently negotiating its publication.
