Dr. Scott Catey, Founder & Managing Partner

The Voice Behind the Voice: I am a musician, ethnographer, broadcaster, and professional ghostwriter. My work stands at the intersection of art, intellect, and human story. A lyric baritone and lifelong performer with deep roots in choral and ensemble traditions, I began my creative journey in elite vocal groups that toured internationally and collaborated with renowned artists—from Harry Belafonte to Foreigner—in some incredible venues—from Carnegie Hall to Wigmore Hall. I even scatted with Taj Mahal on "Stompin' At the Savoy."

As manager and arranger for several groups, including an award-winning barbershop quartet, I led performances across the U.S. and abroad, crafting original arrangements and original works that married technical precision with emotional resonance. And a splash of good Old-Tyme fun!

My formal training is in classical voice, but I'm fluent in popular styles, and my musical background extends across piano, guitar, percussion, and winds, as well as composition. I even picked up the violin in 2026—a lifelong yearning now bearing musical fruit! My understanding of rhythm, phrasing, melody, harmony, and tone color informs the way I approach language and writing: each sentence shaped by a musician’s ear for timing, tempo, mood, and breath. My choral background especially has opened my ears and writing to other voices and how to make the magic with them.

As a musicologist and broadcaster (with 15 years as The Commander on Z100), I have interviewed some of the most influential voices in art, music, and pop culture—from B.B. King and Santana to Graeme Edge, George Carlin, Carole King, John Hiatt, Bob Weir, Sammy Hagar, Ian Anderson, Leo Kottke, John Waters, and others. I've sung with the Young Dubliners, Indigenous, Dr. Hook, Chris Ledoux, David Wade, and many others. Heck, I even got to interview—and wrestle!—Jake “The Snake” Roberts. (He won, but I gave him a run for his money!) What I learned from all of this is deep "third ear" listening and compassion. I carry that ethic forward into my ghostwriting practice, so I can help others translate the full measure of their lives into narrative form. I consolidated all of my learning into my Third Ear Method(TM), a forensic listening and interviewing process for working with creative professionals to produce their unique legacy narratives.

Over the past two decades, I have ghostwritten more than 30 books and over two hundred other long-form works, many of which have transformed practices in media, justice, public health, and leadership. My projects range from memoirs and creative nonfiction to policy narratives and professional monographs, written in partnership with artists and scientists, politicians and CEOs, physicians and mental health experts, as well as cops, cowboys, corrections officers, and others.

I am an ethnographer by formal training, and I combine my scholarly discipline with an artist’s intuition. My academic background includes both a J.D. and Ph.D., which grounds my storytelling in the twin virtues of precision and empathy. Whether capturing the arc of a musician’s creative evolution or a producer’s signature technique or an industry leader's defining moment, my goal is always the same: to craft narratives that are true to voice, powerful in structure, and lasting in impact.

Today, through my ghostwriting, podcasting, and multimedia practice, I partner with creative professionals, executives, and change-makers to bring their most important stories to life. My process is rooted in trust, deep listening, and the belief that every great project—written, recorded, spoken—begins not with words, but with understanding.

Honoring the Land and Its First Stewards

At The Catey Creative Group, we gratefully acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional and unceded lands of the Piscataway and Nacotchtank (Anacostan) peoples, who have for centuries stewarded these lands along the Potomac River.

We recognize their enduring presence and contributions, and we honor the stories, knowledge systems, and struggles of the Indigenous peoples whose lands we occupy.

As a Native-owned creative and justice-focused enterprise, we commit to amplifying Indigenous voices, deepening our relationships with Native communities, and supporting ongoing efforts for sovereignty, visibility, and reparations.

Your Secrets are Safe with Us

Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) are pretty common in the world of ghosting, editing, and other professional writing work, and they are often an important part of an author's goals. Most of the books I've written and the majority of my editorial work has been completed under an NDA, and I always honor that commitment. Its a sacred oath; I'll never disclose secrets, identities, or other information covered by an NDA or confidentiality agreement. And even where our collaboration is public, I will never disclose private or sensitive information shared with me by any author. The stuff you share that you don't want known goes with me to the next world. Look at my portfolio and see for yourself. I can show you what I do without revealing who I did it for.
